The USHJA is developing a program that will bring the lost art of traditional and
basic riding principles back to the sport of showing hunters. The classes will consist
of a traditional hunter course with obstacles similar to the traditional hunt field.
Various jumps both in and outside of the turf arena will be used, including natural
post and rail, stone wall, white board fence or gate, coop, aiken, hedge, oxer, brush,
logs, banks and ditches may be included.
Handy classes may include a mandatory trot fence, putting on a rain coat, picking
up an article from a barrel and taking it to someone, jump into an in & out and halt
before jumping out, halting on course while another horse canters past you, dismount
and lead horse over a small fence and remount.
Emphasis on suitabity of mount to rider, and how they handle the course, adults
may ride ponies.
